Chainring FAQ

What chains can I use with middleburn chainrings?

All Middleburn chainrings are compatible with both 8 and 9 speed chains. However it is essential that you choose the correct chain for your rear cassette.

What torque setting for my chainring bolts?

Middleburn outer alloy bolts should be tightened to 80 InLbs. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to avoid un-even loading. Apply Loctite 222 Locking compound to the threads before assembly. It is not necessary to grease the chainring bolt / chainring interface.

Middleburn inner stainless steel bolts should be tightened to 100 InLbs. Tighten bolts in a cross pattern to avoid un-even loading. Apply Loctite 222 Locking compound to the threads before assembly. It is not necessary to grease the chainring bolt / chainring interface.

When using titanium bolts use “Finish Line Ti-prep” anti seize compound on the threads prior to assembly.

I am having shifting performance problems with my middleburn chainrings. What’s going on?

Middleburn chainring will provide exceptional shifting performance if installed correctly, used with compatible components and with components that are within their wear limits.

1.Check you have installed the chainrings according to the chainring installation instructions. There should be NO lateral movement of the chainring (wobble) as the chainset is rotated. ‘Wobble’ is caused by a bent bottom bracket axle, crank, spider or chainring. If any component is bent it must be replaced.

2. The chainset should achieve a chainline of 47.5mm, an incorrect chainline means that the wrong bottom bracket is installed on you bike for this given chainset.

3. Check all components are well within their wear limits (chainrings / chain / cassette). If a chainring is installed upon a worn drive-chain then general performance will be impaired. It is advisable to always change chainrings, chain and cassette at the same time.

4. Check the front mech, rear mech, shifters and cables are installed according to manufacturers instructions and adjusted correctly, check also that they and are not being fouled at any point through their movement.

If you still have problems with shifting performance, contact your local bike shop for assistance, or Middleburn.
